A computer virus is a software program written to replicate itself by modifying other programs or code stored in a disk's boot sector. It is generally accepted that the first known computer virus was Creeper written for the TENEX operating system on the DEC PDP-10 in 1971.

In the 8-bit era of home computing viruses were transmitted as much by "sneakernet", such as tapes or disks being copied or shared between users, as by actual telecommunications networks.

The first virus for the C64 was the BHP-Virus which originated in Germany circa 1986.
