Once upon a time I had the chance to see my very first computer in person, which was a Commodore VIC-20 that my cousin was borrowing from a friend for homework. Shortly thereafter, in 1982, our family acquired a Commodore 64 as our first home computer. Although I was only 6 years old at the time, I discovered that this thing could be programmed in a language called BASIC. Although trains were my first love, programming computers quickly became my second.

Halfway through elementary school, I already knew more than what any school computers teacher had in his or her lesson plan. I jumped on any opportunity for advanced computer classes which were often after school. Additionally, the limitations of BASIC V2 really helped me understand how the computer was working. This laid the foundation to continue to learn computer programming throughout junior high and high school.

In college I made the decision to transition graphics design major, emphasis in computer graphics design, and my robust background in computer programming (especially related to graphics) gave me the edge over other students and an appreciation for learning software like Adobe Photoshop. Before long, I was teaching a course as adjunct faculty shortly before my graduation.

I am blessed that I currently work with both my passions as I deal with IT for a small railroad contracting company.

Within a few years of this writing will be 40 years since we acquired that first Commodore. I still have it in my possession, and plan to restore and care for it, and most of all share the experience with my children. I am happy to contribute all that I have learned over the years.
