Compute! or COMPUTE! - The Journal for Progressive Computing (ISSN 0194-357X) was a populary American computer magazine for homecomputers about Commodore, Apple and Atari. It was published from 1981 until 1994 monthly and was started quarterly as Len Lindsay's PET Gazette (about Commodore PET and KIM-1) in 1977. The computer magazines or newsletters PET User Notes (Founder: Gene Beals) and 6502 User Notes (Founder: Eric Rehnke, 1976) was also integrated into the Compute!.

In the 1980's all other computer systems of the CPU 6502 were integrated and some spin-off magazines were published. One of them was Compute!'s Gazette for Commodore computers. Since 1988 the magazine content focused on the PC and kicked off the listings.

The first publisher was Small System Services (1979-1983). The next publisher was ABC Publishing (1983-June 1990). The publisher General Media restart a redesigned Compute in September 1990. In the year 1994 sold the publisher Ziff Davis the magazine contents and the subscriber list. The last issue was 168 in September 1994.

A lot of computer books were published in the 1980's about the C64 and Commodore computers under the label COMPUTE! Books. Since 1983 the publisher for the COMPUTE! books was COMPUTE! Publications.
