Description[edit | edit source]

Ultima V – Warriors of Destiny is the fifth part of the Ultima series.
Lord British was abducted into the Dungeons of Wraith during an expedition and is now believed to be lost. Since then, the meanie Blackthorn rules with an iron hand over Britannia. The land lives in fear and disturbance, a resistance movement is formed and your former companions call you, the Avatar, back to Britannia to find Lord British and re-establish order.

Design[edit | edit source]

As with the forerunners you see the world in different scales from an upper/side view, the group is shown as one figure, the landscape scrolls around you. Only during the fight you can freely move the single members of the group.

Sound technically there are only a few (although crisp) sound effects and on the C128 a few music pieces.

A fight breaks out
A fortress from the inside

The group is steered with the joystick, commands are entered by keyboard and partially concretised(?) by a direction input from the joystick. So you can start a conversation with the key "T" after you have chosen the desired "direction for speaking" – so the conversational partner – with the joystick.

Hints[edit | edit source]

Tips & Tricks

  • The password for the resistance is Dawn, the one of the oppressors is Imperia.
  • You get the sextant from David in the lighthouse Greyhaven, if you ask him for it.
  • From Elisatria and Thrud, both followers of the new government, you will get the Black Badge. Address her with "Opression", then "Items".
  • Blackthorne's castle teems with trap doors.
  • The Skull Keys will also open the orange, magically sealed doors.
  • You find the handy lock pick in a tree stump in Minoc. If you absolutely want to spend money, you can also buy it at Kristin Serpent's Hold.
  • The Spyglass shows at night which towns will be attacked next by the Shadowlord. You will get it from Lord Seggalion in Farthrin.
  • With the Grappler the party can cross mountains. You get it from Lord Michael.

Reviews[edit | edit source]

Power Play February 1989 (Power vote: 88 points): "The Avatar epos of Lord British is finally released for the C64. Full eight disk sides of role play game is what you get offered; you have a lot to chew with so much material. The story is cleverly devised, the warriors are brave, the package inserts are precious and the villains are numerous. Unfortunately, the loading times are considerable despite the built-in fastloader. If you are not disturbed by this, you are well-served with Ultima V. (German original by Anatol Locker)

Bamse: "Unbelievable dense atmosphere, strong love for details and exciting tasks. This Ultima is simply ingenious and very complex, but thanks to eight disk sides also very slow!".

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

Commodore 128[edit | edit source]

The C64 version had a boot sector for the C128 so it could instantly start after being put into the drive and starting the C128. Furthermore, the game used the additonal memory in the C128 mode. Amongst others, there was now accompanying music. Loading times and disk changes were significantly reduced, especially if a 1571 was used as a disk drive.
