The Golden Joystick Award is a British award for computer games, which began in 1983 and runs to the present day. The number of categories has steadily expanded to include video game consoles, Publisher of the Year, Soundtrack of the Year and others.

In the first years the awarded categories were:

  • Game of the Year
  • Best Original Game of the Year
  • Adventure Game of the Year
  • Strategy Game of the Year
  • Arcade-Style Game of the Year
  • Programmer of the Year
  • Software House of the Year

Starting in 1989 awards were made separately for 8-bit and 16-bit games, but this sub-categorisation was dropped a few years later.

In the C64-Wiki, we consider the history of the award and the awards from the viewpoint of the Commodore home computers until the mid-1990s.
