[edit] Description
It is the goal of Brickout to clear the game area of all bricks. To get rid of those stones at least two neighboring, equally colored bricks have to be clicked away. The more bricks of the same color are removed at once the higher the score will be for that move.
Furthermore, there are additional buttons on the right hand side of the screen which can be used to shift and flip the bricks' pattern.
When shifting the bricks the leftmost row is moved out left and appears again on the right side of the game area. Flipping means rotating the area by 180°: The bricks disappear and fall in to the game area from the top but now with the pattern arranged upside-down. In higher levels more bricks are moved within and dropped into the game area by using shift and upon clearing the field (Comment: Don't know what they talk about in that last sentence - even in the German article...).
There are 99 levels in the game which can be chosen randomly to start from. There's also a hidden level 100. It's also possible to play all 99 levels in a shuffled order in each difficulty stage.
[edit] Design
The game has been programmed entirely in assembly language. The sound effects match the movements of the bricks very well. The game can be controlled by mouse or joystick. Those input devices are also used for entering the players' data.
High- and lowscores are saved onto a separate disk. The name of the last player from a previous session is automatically restored.
There are 3 difficulty levels:
- Easy - 4 different types of bricks, the likelihood of one particular brick-type is increased
- Normal - 4 different types of bricks, the likelihood of all brick-types is equally distributed
- Hard - One more type of brick adds to the crowd
The game comprises 4 different SID tunes, done by RIO:
- Intro
- Choosing Level
- Game Over and game area NOT entirely cleared
- Game Over and game area entirely cleared
If you make it to clear all bricks in one level you receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold Cup according to the difficulty level.
[edit] Hints
A Hint From Trifox
Higher score
Try to clear as many bricks as possible with the last move; in case of the 95% (Comment: No idea what they talk about...) version the number of bricks wiped away in the last move adds by the power of 3! E. g.: If one takes away 30 bricks at the end of the game it gains 27000 points!
If one clears an entire field of bricks your score is doubled.
[edit] Solution
Besides the standard levels 0 through 99 there's an additional 101st level, level 100. There's nothing special to it but being yet another HARD-level.

Sledgie: "The game is highly addictive and makes a lot of fun. Graphics and sound effects match the gameplay very well."
